  1. Moral intent (a good will) seeks the best good and least harm for everyone. That is the one objective that everyone can subscribe to. Moral duty is to actively pursue this objective. The law is a tool for serving morality. Thus any rule is subject to moral judgment, and two alternative rules, e.g. an old rule and a new one, are evaluated in terms of which best accomplishes the moral objective.

Forget about “abstract” duties. Morality is a practical matter of improving good and reducing harm, for everyone. To the degree that good and harm can be objectively measured, morality is objective.

Ethics, laws, and other rule systems are guides to behavior that is expected to produce good or reduce harm. They are always subject to moral judgment and tend to evolve over time.
