October Great Books Reading Project Reminder

This is another reminder that I am embarking on the 10 year reading plan provided by Mortimer J. Adler in his Great Books of the Western World set of 60 volumes beginning in January 2015. I invite anyone interested in decade of great reading to join me in the reading and discussion of these books, whether one or all of them.

If any of you are interested in joining me, I am considering putting together either forum-style (such as in the comments section of blog posts) or perhaps live-via-video (Google Hangouts or similar) discussions once a month or so to discuss that month’s readings. You can purchase your own copy of the Great Books for a fairly low price at many books websites, such as Amazon. For those who cannot afford to purchase the entire set, I will be posting links to buy individual copies of each as well as PDF versions of those that are out of copyright and available online. I have also adapted Adler’s reading plan to a month-by-month schedule beginning January 2015 and ending December 2024; you can access that here. [Most months, it seems to average out to about 5-10 pages per day.]

I am looking forward to some great reading and some great discussion beginning in January!

  1. Hello,

We are a not-for-profit educational organization founded by Mortimer Adler and we have recently made an exciting discovery—three years after writing the wonderfully expanded third edition of How to Read a Book, Mortimer Adler and Charles Van Doren made a series of thirteen 14-minute videos—lively discussing the art of reading. The videos were produced by Encyclopaedia Britannica. For reasons unknown, sometime after their original publication, these videos were lost.

Three hours with Mortimer Adler and Charles Van Doren, lively discussing the art of reading on one DVD. A must for all readers, libraries and classroom teaching the art of reading.

I cannot exaggerate how instructive these programs are—we are so sure that you will agree, if you are not completely satisfied, we will refund your donation.

    Thank you,
