Review: Begin Here: The Forgotten Conditions of Teaching and Learning

Begin Here: The Forgotten Conditions of Teaching and Learning
Begin Here: The Forgotten Conditions of Teaching and Learning by Jacques Barzun

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Barzun searches out, exposes, and addresses the many problems with education today, both explaining the problems themselves and exposing solutions in his typical engaging and erudite style. From ill-prepared teachers to the functional illiteracy of the general population to tone-deaf multiple choice tests and mind-crushing experiments like “social studies,” Barzun explains why we have gone horribly wrong and what we can do to fix it. As with all of Barzun’s works, there is not a page in this book that is not filled with wisdom. I recommend this book to all; as the title says: “begin here.” You will not regret it.
