As with all of the writings of St. Ephrem of Syria, these hymns overflow with beauty and insight. St. Ephrem takes up the topics of the first few chapters of Genesis and brings out their mystical and spiritual meaning in poetic form. Also included in this book is a selection from St. Ephrem’s commentary on Genesis chapters 2 and 3. The lengthy introduction by Sebastian Brock is also extremely helpful and offers a great deal of insight on Genesis, St. Ephrem, Syriac Christianity, hymnography, and many more related topics. For those looking for a good introduction to a Patristic and traditional Christian approach to the accounts of Creation and the Fall in Genesis, this is a great book to start with.
